Electronics Pro or Con?

Now a days people always seem to be attached to their phone, iPod, or laptop. Anywhere you go all you see is people on their phones. What happened to just being free from all electronics and enjoying time with family and friends? It seems that all we care about are our electronics; if something happens to them we throw the biggest fit ever. It’s like our lives revolve around electronics. Sometimes we just need to take a break from them and just go outside and enjoy the day. It’s useful to have a phone but we don’t need to carry them with us all the time. Is it to much to ask that we just take 30 minutes of our lives to be free from all electronics and do something? Perhaps we can read a book or enjoy the fresh air. As I was reading Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, I realized that it’s true we are wasting time just looking at clocks and electronics watching our lives go by minute after minute.

  1. Here's my look on this. I don't think, while being born into an electronic based culture, we can give it up easily. The phones, the laptops, and the iPod all have their uses. They are used for our entertainment and things of the sort. They also have uses that aren't wasting our time. Sure, many people will agree that it is just a waste of time and that there are other things worth doing. It just really depends on how attached someone is to electronics and their values on time and how to spend it. I can tell you, I'm as attached as it gets to the computer.
Now, the thread title -Pro or Con-
It just depends on who it is talking. It is a pro to me in ways, a con in other. A general con could possibly be that a child being too into electronics can find themselves anti-social. A pro that many might miss on would be that electronics are the fastest way to communicate and learn. Like many things, it (electronics) has ups and downs. Just wait for the follow-ups.

  2. Answering your question on whether Electronics are a pro or a con, I agree with Ronald. Indeed electronics can be either a pro or a con depending on how a person uses it. For example sometimes playing video games tends to hold you from doing your homework as a person wants to play the game more. At the same time a computer (internet) can help you with your homework in many different ways like trying to find an explanation to a certain lesson that you didn’t understand in school. Therefore I tend to lean more toward electronics as a pro because if one uses it in moderation he will benefit from it more that he will lose. And don’t forget that without the electronics that we have today our world will not be linked in the way it is today because as Ronald said electronics provide us with ways of communication with each other whether it being from one house to the other or from one continent to the other.

  3. As I read your post I automatacliy agreed with you that our lives are so involved with technology but, than I realizes its both. Pro and Con, I think it just depends on how people use it and how much control they have. Being born and raised in an advance technology era it’s hard. It also has to do with completion on who has this and that or who can afford the best and who can’t. Let’s remember that our society, believe it or not is full of completion and envy. Sometimes we need technology for work, school or business. Like for my sister and mom they need their phones for important emails from work or school but then again like you mentioned the family time just goes away. I just think this will get even worser as time goes by due to the fact that technology is advancing in an alarming rate and we the people have to be prepared on how to control ourselves and not let technology take over our lives even more.

  4. There is almost no question about it, we rely much more on technology now, than ever before. A laptop computer is a necessity for pretty much all college bound students. From children who are starting kindergarten to the elderly; everyone has a cell phone. The internet is now available on your cell phone, as well as in school, in libraries, and of course, your home computer. I cannot even imagine completing a school project with out using the internet to look up information. We are surrounded by technology.

I think that the main "pro" of technology, is its convenience. With technology we can work faster, and more effeciently. However, we sacrifice the skill that goes into these tasks when technology is not available. This is something that we have to be careful about. If we depend too much on technology we will not be able to function with out it.

For example, many kids must be taught how to use tools in a book, such as an index, becuase a book does not come with a search engine. If the electronics were taken away, we would have a lot of difficulty completing simple tasks. We must be sure that we do not depend too much on technology.
