In the novel Brave New World, Helmholtz Watson is frustrated with the fact that he is teaching about how to write, and how to understand conditioning of emotions; and he is unable to actually write with emotions. This calls into question if writing should indeed be written with emotion, or rather with accuracy, precision and no personal touches. Throughout the book Watson is dissatisfied with the world, longing to use his talents in writing and being able to express the opinions that other see as shameful. The suppression of creative writing does just highlight the suppressive nature that this world uses in order to create stability, and later on in the novel Watson sees this clearly. But nonetheless, it's still something that he wanted to express.
There are many types of written documents. There are novels that tell stories, biographies that give information about peoples lives, dictionaries that define certain words and so on and so fourth. What makes writing "good". Is it how accurate the writing is, or how the sentences flow. Does it take emotion to compose a well written piece of literature, or just a basic understanding of the english language. These questions force me to recall times when I received low marks on papers that I turned in, not because of how they where composed; but because of small grammar errors and punctation mistakes.
Poetry is astounding when read, and written correctly; but is only writing with emotion considered "good"?
I’d say that the amount of emotion expressed in your writing should depend on what is being written. If you were, for example, asked to write down facts from a movie, you wouldn’t include how much you enjoyed it or what your favorite scene was. If you were, on the other hand, asked to write a response to the movie, you would be required to express your opinion on it and encouraged to write your feelings about any particular scene, not give a summary about it. Helmholtz apparently had a talent for writing with creative flow and expression, but this type of writing was not allowed in his world. I suppose writing grammatically is always expected, but whether it should articulate emotion depends on what is being written.
