Glass, can we see through it or not?

In The Shallows Carr talks about how attention spans are being decreased by the internet. With this in mind, I was very alarmed when I read about Google's "Project Glass," a project aimed at developing a pair of glasses which have a HUD, or Heads Up Display, which would project movies, videos, and other types of entertainment, as well as ads, directly into your field of vision. The thing that i find so alarming is the fact that the internet is already so distracting and takes up most of our attention, and this would only worsen it. Right now, we have to sit in front of a computer or pull out a smart phone if we happen to have one to connect to the internet. With a device that could allow a switch between the real and internet world simply by shifting your gaze, wouldn't the distraction be multiplied tenfold? "Project Glass" could make the internet truly with us at all times, even more so than it is now. I can only imagine the effect that such a constant distraction would have on our brains and our attention spans. Sure, it would be cool and convenient to have the internet available at the flick of the eye, but the darker potential of this device worries me.

  1. With all the negative ideas and consequences our summer reading has told us about, I feel as if we have no more power to stop this growing system. It may possibly control our world entirely. As a generation who is aware of so much of the past, present, and the future, we naturally would feel fear and anxiety towards what's going to happen. But, i also feel that, as a people, we have succeeded greatly at adapting ourselves to several systems, without losing our selves. Much of the technological world, is combination of intelligence and natural human creativity. Many behind the creations of such devices, are people yearning for a chance to experience life differently, and have new outlets to express ourselves. I believe as a human race we must develop and find importance in our natural ability to imagine and CONDUCT creativity, never let it conduct us. If we do so, we will manipulate all of our new technologies and maybe even make a better world.
