Talk and No Action
In The Shallows, Carr provides many warnings and insights to the future dominance of the internet in our lives. He claims that in order to prevent further damage to our society, we have to take action and make a difference in the world. It is clear that the first step in doing this is by becoming aware of the negative effects and ways our brains have been altered for the worse. The question that concerns me is if we are really willing to do anything about the situations. Of course there are those who see the defects of technology, but is this enough to make cause a great concern? For instance, even though I am now fully aware of the way technology, and specifically the internet, has taken over my life, I wouldn't be able to change my ways or even be willing to give it up. It has so many improvements that I almost don't mind sacrificing the way my brain functions, which is obviously a major issue. Hasn't it gotten to the point where we depend on technology and the media so much that we don't want it out of our lives? Can there really be a difference made or will there still be the rise of damage it is producing in our world? In other words, are we being warned and told to start doing something but know we will still continue to use technology as we normally do?
