".. awkward.."

In the future seen by Neil Postman, technology will allow humans to corner themselves into a place where mostly everything that requires thought and personality will be done for them because of their devotion to the cyber world and television. Human beings are handicapped to a point in which it seems that a human can no longer fluently communicate without the aid of technology. I increasingly see traces of the effect of the internet on relationships in high school. Often times, I will hear teenagers talk about how awkward something is, or how there was an awkward silence. I wonder how many moments were considered awkward to teens in the 80s, where their face to face social skills hadn't been diffused be dependence on cyber social networking. Many of these social situations are labeled as awkward not because they are genuinely awkward situations but because us teenagers are becoming more and more uncomfortable with having to face someone in real life, when we are so used to only having to insert a text into a box with their picture next to it. Of course no matter what day and age, there is always room for awkward situations in the life of a teenager, but with today's teenagers commitment to social networks and a virtual social circle its seems that teens are less inapt to confidently express themselves in a face to face scenario.

  2. I agree with you Gemma, for I have been in a situation before when a friend and I talk perfectly well in text message, but when it came to face to face contact, not a single word was spoken. Some people may just naturally be more quiet and unsocial, and text messaging and email helps these people become more vocal. So, like anything else, there is a good and a bad part to technology like this!

  3. I completely agree with you, I never really noticed that until now. Us teens find it more easier to communicate through technology because we are more afraid of rejection and humiliation. Just like Alexa me and my friend have that same situation and it is just completely awkward when I see them face to face. I guess it's because with texting someone it's easier to talk to them because you can't really see their expressions. But that's just my opinion.
