Caught a Glimpse

I was over at my grandparent’s house reading The Shallows listening to nothing but the two fans buzz and the clock tick. In an hour I had read nearly seventy pages. I could hardly believe it. I use to be able to read that much, but lately I have been lucky to get forty or fifty pages in that time. I could not figure out how I had read so much. Then I realized I had literally no technology around me. I had forgotten my phone at home and my ipod was dead. In an earlier post I had said how hard it was for me to focus without music or my phone. I have come to the conclusion that if there is nothing around us to distract us, we would not be tempted to use it. I caught a glimpse of my old brain today. I had forgotten how much I enjoy reading long, meaningful books. I have to agree with Carr. I miss my old brain.

  1. Technology can be very distracting at times. I prefer to go online and have fun than to do my homework. Now that I read The Shallows and Amusing Ourselves to Death I have seen media for what it truly is and became more independent from it. I quickly saw results with the amount of school work that I was completing. Earlier today I was at the DMV and was able to read a big portion of The Shallows since I had no electronic devices on me. I actually enjoy not being so dependent from technology.
