Television: it's really just entertainment disguised.
Amusing Ourselves to Death caused me to think twice about what I see on the tv. As I was reading, I couldn't help but continuously nod and agree as Postman continued to make points about television and then follow up with all these good reasons.
Are the things we watch informational, or really just entertaining? When discussing this topic, Postman brought up watching the news on tv. Why do we watch the news? To know about things currently going on, right? What else? He remarks about how after watching, would you really still do anything about it? It's likely you'd just bring it up in a conversation, but not really do anything about it. Mostly nothing about the news will really change how your day will go weather being an exception).
Does this work with any sort of news that we encounter? Well, we have a chance to test that using this summer assignment.
We're reading this book that highlights the problems given to us with technology. After knowing how it affects us badly, are we willing to change our ways or are we just going to talk about them like we do through this summer blogging assignment. Remember, the internet, and any other modern day advancement, is what we make of it.
Of course the news is informational, but the media enjoys spicing up the story in order for the viewers to continue watching. It's strange how we really don't put any effort into changing the bad news into good news, but I believe it's the media's fault. They only share the unnecessary, unimportant news.
ReplyDelete"Breaking news. There's a forest fire here, lit by accident." Okay, well how are we going to fix that? The firemen are already on the move, so how are we supposed to help? They don't share the important news, the problems that are occurring on purpose. They're reason is because they don't want to scare the viewers, but if they're not scared, how are they going to fix it? We can't fix a forest fire, but we can fix world problems. It is incredibly annoying how they only like to show the little accidents because it is much easier to make it seem entertaining.
The news is meant to be a warning, not entertainment.
