As the 21st century begins its second decade, the internet has reached the highest state as a medium. Like the book or television, everyone has one or knows how to use one. Television was unveiled to the public in 1925. The internet was first conceived in 1957, 20 years after the digital computer was created. Television was made purely entertainment purposes, so it took the 20th century by storm. The computer use became available to the public in 1992 and its use exploded ever since.
For the first time in 2010, a study shown that the internet use was greater than television's. Is this a good thing? The computer seems to hold much different uses than television. The television seems to be very biased for entertainment. The internet bring new issues altogether such as social connection and constant distractions. Only two years have passed, and people are noting that they're becoming easily distracted because of the internet.Which technology will change our lives? Which is beneficial? Which is harmful? I believe that internet has changed my life way more than television. I never thought that we would have literal changes in our brain due to internet use. A loss of focus scares me more than the mixing entertainment and other serious forms of discourse. What are your thoughts?
I think that this loss of focus is very scary, and I can feel its effects. I often look a word up in the dictionary, put the dictionary down, walk away, and then realize that i wasn't really paying attention to the definition and have to look it up again.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the TV vs. Internet part of your post, I believe that they are both biased to entertainment. Heavily biased. the reason that the internet is so much more appealing is because of its versatility. You can look up an almost endless amount of subject matter on the internet, as apposed to watching whatever happens to be on TV. The internet also has a much deeper level of interaction than television. with TV, you are simply an observer, watching the flashy lights. With the internet, you can change pages at will, type a blog post, and perform searches. You are no longer an observer, but a critical part of the process. The internet provides a feeling that you are actually doing something, which television does not.
I feel the lack of focus we have is from television and internet because they both cause our brain to work that much less too obtain information. In response to the question, I feel the internet is more beneficial than telelvision because it holds the same exact information you can see on t.v. and more.
