As more inventions replace the previous standing ones, will there ever be an invention that replaces purpose of society?
The other day while watching television, a commercial for a new smart phone went on air. The opening scene was an old man in a wheelchair. He is wearing a suit and looks as if he is ready to go out. He starts talking to a female about his day and asks what she wants to eat, finally a female voice reply's,"I don't know about you, but I'm in the mood for some Chinese!". The old man chuckles and looks down at something. Midway through their conversation, it shows that the voice is actually coming from the man's smart phone which is sitting in his lap. The new phone comes with an installed program that you can talk to. The commercial ends with the old man still sitting in his hotel room eating delivered Chinese food as he continues to converse and exchange jokes with this female voice coming from his phone.
While reading The Shallows, I stumbled upon possibility that it in the future there will be an absence of desire to communicate with other human beings when virtual hand selected personalities will be more pleasing to talk to. Its beginning to look as if this idea is not so far out after all.
I predict that in the future our best friends will be our electronics. We now have the Iphone which can talk to you. In the future why would we talk to others when we have our phones available to talk to us 24 hours a day?
ReplyDeleteI think that's pretty scary. We will never be completely satisfied if we always look to technology to please us. Just think in about ten years where would technology be then? What's next dancing with our phones? Hopefully something will stop this technology overtake because in my opinion it is starting to get out of hand.
