Is the internet just an excuse?

While reading The Shallows I realized something, it seems as though Nicholas Carr is using the internet as an excuse for him not being about to concentrate. He states over and over again that he has this longing to be on the computer and that when he reads he seems to be scanning the page instead of actually reading it. He says that the reason is because he’s used to the internet just giving him the answers. I don’t think I agree with him. In my opinion, it’s just him trying to find something to blame his loss of concentration on. I am a big computer person; I use technology probably more than most people. I go on Tumblr every thirty minutes, I check Facebook every hour, and I go on Instagram about every fifteen minutes, but I can actually read a book word for word, page by page, no problem. Technology has no effect on my mentality. Maybe it has an effect on some people, but I don’t understand how, since I myself am not affected by it. Am I the only one that thinks that?

  1. Yes , he uses it as an excuse to much, but this reason does present real problems. The internet makes us hungry for information constantly, which is part of the reason Carr complains about how it has changed his brain from being curious to obsessive. However, I do agree with you that he uses it as an excuse to much, for if he really felt as if his brain was diminishing as he says, why doesn't we just open up a book?
