Drug Abuse
In Brave New World drugs are non existent except for soma. This is used by everyone all the time. It causes the user to fall asleep and have their own fantasy in their dreams. It is an easy way to escape the world they live in if things do not go the way they want it to. This is not so far fetched from what is happening today. People today use drugs to escape the problems of the real world. The only thing is that the drugs of today have side effects that can end in death. If soma were available today I believe many more people would be using drugs. A deterrent for many people from using drugs is the side affects that happen.People try not to drink to much in order to avoid the headaches and vomiting that follows the next morning. As a child we are shown the ill effects from all types of drugs, which is a type of conditioning for us. If you were facing hardships in your life and you could find an easy way out without side effects would you take it? Soma may not be the morale thing to do, but in some cases it is the logical. In todays world it could easily be used for medical purposes. People in surgery or cancer therapy can use it to help ease the pain and make it non existent to them. My self personally would not use some beause the world is what it is for a reason. There are problems and issues facing us to show who we are, but for some people soma would be the best thing. Would it be best for you?

I agree that it is the trials in which we are put through that ultimately build us up to be who we are today. Drugs like soma do not necessarily defeat that purpose because although it is not the choice which attacks the trial we are going through directly it is nonetheless a choice one makes as a result of the situation. It is still a response, so it still contributes to define us as who we are.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your point that people use drugs in todays world to cover up their own problems, just as they use soma in Brave New World. All this does is help you forget about the problems in your life and the horrible predicament your in, and then what? You still wake up to the same situation in which will only be made worse by drug use. I don't think people should use drugs to cover up their problems because it only hurts the person more, not help.
