How Important is an Image?

In chapter four of Amusing Ourselves to Death, Postman makes a point about the way people see things today compared to the way things were seen in the past. He mentions how when we think about a person, our minds see a certain image of that person (when we think of Einstein, the photograph of him with his tongue sticking out comes to mind). He also remarked how people back then had a different mindset. If you were a famous person, you wouldn't necessarily be recognized by your face. You were known by your words or words written about you in print. Instead of an image coming to mind when a name comes up, a set of words enter your thoughts. Now we can recognize so many faces and just know they're famous for something, but not always sure what for.
It's sort of like how we know where our classrooms in school are, but we don't know the actual room numbers. It's because when we think about our classrooms we think of the location, the teacher, or the other kids we have the class with not the number painted on the door.
Then in chapter five Postman points out the importance of images in advertising. Before, newspapers and magazines relied on attention-grabbing headlines to capture the attention of readers. Today, it's the newspapers with the most interesting images that are picked up from news stands.
We no longer see words, we see pictures. Images are a part of daily lives now. This proves that we have shifted from an age of literature.
