What is happiness?

What is happiness? Is it really having everything you want and having no hardships? In Brave New World everyone is happy, but no one has joy. They live perfect lives with no hardships and a society based on fun. But is it really perfect? They have no love or family and they are taught to hate  nature and literature. Do people really think that's living perfectly? I would gladly go through any hardship in order to not have to give up my family. They are what makes me happy, so how can a whole society be "happy" without that? To me people in Huxley's world aren't happy, they're not really even living. They are going by day to day enjoying pleasures but not finding happiness. Going from one person to the next without any connections. Not loving, not even really feeling for anyone. I wouldn't want to live that way, would you?

  1. I agree that everyone in Brave New World was happy, but no one had joy. It confused me to think that they could go from one person to another and act like nothing was going on. They did not believe in staying with one person, or even having children. What type of world is that? The world we live in today maybe hinting clues about what might be in our future. Almost everyone wants to be loved, but no one wants to get married. Some people want to have sex, but not have children. I would not want to live in a world where 'love' was a secret language.

  2. They all seemed very happy, but was it because they all got a drug that took them away from their daily routine. How could they be happy without having a family and spouse. Being with different people all the time really isn't happiness. I would get tired of doing the same thing everyday wouldn't you. Once in a while you need to try knew things.

  3. I believe that the people in Brave New World were happy and content with their lives, but they felt nothing else. They were conditioned to be that way and if they ever didn't feel "happy" they took soma. It seems as if they lived as robots because they did not love, nor did they express many emotions. The way that the citizens of the World State lived seems crazy to us because we live so differently from the way they do. I definitely would not want to live in a world where there is no family or love.
