Happiness is Subjective

In Brave New World, The citizens are happy with their lives. Mr. Savage, however, is not happy with the way that society has gone. The reason for this difference is that the citizens do not know any better. In the same way, a modern day person who lives without knowing about technology, say a member of a tribe in Africa for example, is happy without technology and happy with the bare minimum, while we would be suffering if put in his shoes. My point is that happiness is what we ourselves believe it to be, not what anyone else tells us it is. (although they often overlap) For that reason, the people of Brave New World  believe that they are happy. If this is the case, is it really right for us to think that they should change? Should we ban the foods of other cultures just because we think they are disgusting in ours? In the past, it was considered proper for women not to own land and not to vote. People of the past would think our society and outrage just as we think the society in Brave New World is wrong.

My point is that different cultures accept different things. Who are we to question another one, even if ours deems it wrong? If everyone believes that they are happy, even though we wouldn't be in their shoes, do we really have a right to change it?
