Open Yourself

Its seems only natural for us to be close minded and focus on only our own problems because it is us who lives inside our bodies and sees the world through our own two eyes. In The Shallows, Carr touches upon how we lose interest and capability to focus enough to read books and how we want only constant mindless entertainment. When we read a book that is written in first person, we are taking a step out of our own body and into that of the characters in a novel. We allow ourselves to see the world through a different perspective. This opens up our mind to understand those in situations we wouldn't probably never face in our own lives. By cutting off this opportunity for one to have a intimate relationship with the world through a broader spectrum, we are forced to be weaker and more vulnerable to fall into the grips of a superficial and self pleasing society. Once we stop taking the time and patience to fully engage ourselves into the shoes and stories of others we lose that sense of open mindedness.
