I was disappointed with the ending of Brave New World. I believed that John was strong and nothing would break him. Despite not giving into temptation and not becoming what society wanted him to be, he took his own life. I pondered why he would resort to something so tragic and came to the conclusion that he would rather die with his beliefs than become what he despised.
However, wouldn't it have been better for John to live for his beliefs instead of dying for them? You can't accomplish anything in death. Perhaps John saw it was useless to live for them if no one would be able to understand them. There's millions brainwashed people versus one man with different morals and beliefs. Those aren't very good odds. John might have realized that he would be harassed by society until he changed into everything he was against. He probably believed that there was no pointing in living unhappy as something you weren't for the sake of society to be happy. He gave up rather than giving in. As cowardly as that sounds, it takes a lot of courage to end your own life. His death sends the message of how society can push us so far to be perfect in its eye, but is it worth it when you give up everything you are as an individual?
