The reshaping of human culture

Reading The Shallows by Nicholas Carr I noticed something, throughout history we're been shaping our whole existence around technology. While I was reading this book i've become to notice that our life is indeed wrapped around technology. I literally had to turn my phone off to start reading this book, i'm glad I did because i've become really interested in it. Carr mentions that the routines of our lives follow the path laid down by technology. Can we agree with this? Look around, no doubt we've been sucked into technology. We post on a blog, text, Facebook, television, etc. Without the use of modern day technology we wouldn't be able to do the complicated surgical procedures we do today. So down to the the main question, are we on the right path? Being dependent on technology to the point if we didn't have it we would be in a state of panic? To me, I think there is no other way to go in our society. We've been shaped by technology, grew up with it and it is now a main factor in our lives today.

  1. After I read your post I began to wonder what would happen lets say if a solar flare caused all of our electronics to malfunction. Would we be able to survive without entertainment, and if so then what would we do for fun. Will we be able to finally concentrate on the book we are reading?

  2. Your post is very interesting to me because it points out how technology has in fact laid down the routines of our lives. I agree that we use it for so many things and sometimes don't even realize how much we need it. I think that there is no doubt we have benefits such as saving lives with new machines and discoveries, and this is because of technology. Because we revolve around it, it is very hard for me to imagine what would happen if it were somehow taken away from us. I'm sure the world would be in a state of panic because all of the improvements would vanish before our eyes and we wouldn't know how to cope without it. We are used to having it available and easy for us to access for certain circumstances, meaning we'd have to find a way to live without its enhancements.
