While reading Amusing Ourselves to Death, I conceived that society expressing their
opinions based on appearances is nothing to be surprised of. In fact, it has been
ongoing for decades if not centuries within many cultures or groups. When Postman wrote, "Most spend more
time with their hair dryers than their scripts," it made me realize people wanted to see
someone beautiful, handsome, or surreal rather than an ordinary person. From the perspective of a typical audience, seeing ordinary people such as themselves would seem boring and unsatisfying. In modern-day times though, the full blame should
not go to the media choosing what they want based on appearances when it is,
us, the audience or consumers who set the conditions and demands for more. Is
it not the media who listens to our requests for our "need" or wants
through polls or Facebook pages? Are we not the ones letting them use us in the
first place by giving our feedback?
