Can We Survive Without The Internet?

The Answer in our today's world is no. Not even one person today can survive more than a couple of days without the internet, well maybe old people, but talking in general no one can. we use the internet today in almost everything including our phones, iPod, computers, video games and even our televisions today are connected to the internet. Another example why we can't survive without the internet is that even some school work these days uses it just like the one that i am doing right now. Yes we can't survive without the internet but it is definitely beneficial to our lives if we use it in moderation, an example could be using it for finding something that we didn't understand at school. Overall the Internet has succeeded in sucking our lives, i mean look at the amount of time a teenage person spends on Facebook today, or on online video games. So can we really survive without the Internet? Does the Internet really control our lives?

  1. Honestly, I believe the reason we cannot survive without the internet is because most of our day to day activities rely on using it. While many people are addicted to the internet, others require the internet to perform their tasks. Checking stocks, setting up meetings, making reservations, looking up addresses; all of these require the internet. Sure, some might say that you could do these activities the old fashioned way, but is it really practical? If you had to buy a certain tool which is unavailable at your local Home Depot, would you realistically travel hundreds of miles to obtain it? No, you would not. A smart person would do the much more efficient way of buying it on EBay.
While I do use the internet a lot, I do not consider myself addicted. The internet serves as a fountain of knowledge and it is a very cheap form of entertainment for what you get out of it. If you gave me a billion dollars, I would never touch the internet again. I would spend the rest of my life traveling, experiencing new things, and eating different foods. The internet is just a very cheap and convenient substitute for entertainment and performing otherwise unreasonable tasks.

  2. To kick-start my opinion, I'd like to point out "maybe old people." Gave me quite a laugh when I read it in your voice. Reminds me how my grandparents don't use the computer that much. Most of my day-to-day activities require the use of the internet, and Giovanni points out one of them: checking the stock market. Checking online just happens to be the easiest way from opening to closing of the market to keep track of my money. And when I need something bought fast and can't get it near me, I'd do online shopping with eBay or Amazon. Those are things that people do that, in my opinion, make the internet worth having.
The internet has done quite a great job in "sucking" my life. And what Gio points out is true. It is just a substitute for thins we can't really do. For the meantime, I'm addicted to the internet, but usually only in the summer time where I'm free of school except for summer homework. Which is also a good reason for the internet. For example, Mr. Ducar uses a system that cuts his grading time and is easy for us to use.
There aren't that many people I know personally who can go without the Internet. Because of all the reasons listed above, that would cut out all investors, online shoppers, students. I think the question you're trying to ask is "Can we survive without taking advantage or using the entertainment of the Internet?"
The answer to your question for me is no, I can't survive. I'm constantly checking for prices in the stock market and gold and silver. I need to do my work online and set meetings up with friends using it.
The answer to the question I proposed would be closer to a yes. I think there is a slight chance that we can survive without the entertainment of the Internet because of the many uses that are need-based and not for our entertainment.

  3. Basically the internet is simply a tool used for convenience. We don't need it to survive, but everyday actions are more practical because of it, as Gio said. I agree that the main purpose should be entertainment. Personally, I am not addicted to the internet either. When I am bored I usually just watched a couple YouTube videos or check on my Facebook. Gio brought up a great point that the internet provides cheap entertainment. If my friends are busy or if I'm not allowed out, what else would I do? I guess I could read or get some fresh air. The main point is that the internet is SUPER CONVENIENT. I have said this many times, but we should just take advantage of the convenience.

  4. We cannot survive without the Internet because we don't want to. Carr wrote that we are "Generation Net". We have grown up with the Internet. We haven't ever been without it. Obviously it can be done. I know older people who don't even know what the Internet is. So they don't care about it. The thing is, they were raised NOT needin a computer to do their work or look things up. They did it the old fasion way: went to the library, spent hours trying to find what they needed, and repeated this action until their work was done. So I believe we could survive without the Internet, we just don't want to.

  5. We can easily survive without the internet, but nobody would be willing to take that sacrifice. It makes our lives too easy to just give it up. Back when we were younger, I'm sure we wouldn't have a problem going without the internet, but not now. If you really think about it, most of us use the internet every hour! Whether it's directly from a computer, online gaming, iPhones, iPads, etc. Without even noticing we activate the internet for a couple of seconds, click to a new page, then go on with our life. I think it'd be interesting to have a buzzer going off each time the internet is used in your home, I bet every single one us would be surprised how much we rely on it.
