The oddities of Brave New World
In the Huxlean world, societies traditions differ extremely from ours. Our society is a very familial and traditional society. We have siblings, parents, grandparents-and so on-who we love, and In turn love us. This idea is as absurd as the idea of a mother in Brave New World. In the novel, their are thousands of look-alikes who are engineered in a lab, instead of born in a hospital and who are conditioned by a speaker, instead of raised by a mother. So there is no such thing as family. Another tradition in Brave New World is their consumption of soma. Soma is like their personal supply of drugs, except not only is it legal, but it's peculiar if your not taking it. In their society, they created soma for the purpose of not feeling. In other words if their feeling any bit of emotion other than happiness, it's time to take the soma.
