A Stand for Technology
Because we are dependent on technology, people believe we are becoming less smart. In my opinion, this is false. Technology allows us to know more and more. We are not becoming less smart, we are just exposed to infinite knowledge. We cannot compare the knowledge of today and back then. Today there is too much to absorb. I am not claiming that we are smarter than older generations. I am stating there is a difference between what we all had the chance to learn. If I was to use an old typewriter, I definitely would not know how to use it. However, if an eighty year old was to use an iPad, I'm sure he or she would require assistance. For instance, older generations are definitely not as computer savvy as we are today. My own mother was incapable of setting up an account on Facebook. I had to set up an account for her, and she still barely understands the functions of the universal social network. I understand, however, that all means of education, communication, etc. were not simply on a computer screen back back then. Technology didn't simplify problems as they do today. I still strongly believe that we take advantage of what we have today. Technology is not making us stupid. We are just discovering more problems to figure out.

I agree with you Jasmine that technology does not make us less smart. Technology provides a new medium to access the infinite information for a quicker gaining of knowledge. However, Nicholas Carr dabbles in the fact that technology does not allow us to attain the deeper level of thinking that we once possessed when books were more prevalent. With our seemingly shorter attention spans and quick distractibility, the knowledge we receive from reading on technological equipment is not as profound or influential to our memory compared to reading text on paper when you must actually search for answers and information. The reference to different responses to iPads and an old typewriter verify the fact that today’s generation grew up with different technology compared to the past; therefore, our brains function in a different manner.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with both of you. Technology is not our enemy, it is something people have created. They created it in order to evolve, and improve our capacity for learning. To create new things that wouldn't have been possible to make without technology. It is a tool for learning, and if we didn't have it, there would be no room for growth. We would be stuck in the past.
