Religious views in Brave New World

In chapter 17 of Brave New World as John and Mond are having the discussion about god and religious views, John says “God’s the reason for everything noble and fine and heroic.” Mond replies by saying that in their society there is no need for heroism and nobility, and basically says that nobody is equivalent to god. But if you think about it, wouldn’t the controller kind of be the equivalent to god in comparing our world to theirs? The controller has ultimate control over everything.  The controller “eliminated everything unpleasant” stated by John. I’m not religious myself so I’m kind of going of what I’ve heard, but wouldn’t eliminating unpleasantness from everybody and the world be kind of like going to church and asking for forgiveness of sins? When you don’t have forgiveness of a sin you have committed you feel unhappy with yourself, and you need to ask god to forgive you. So like I said, wouldn’t the controller in some way be a god?

  2. I think that the controller isnt really a god but a type of president in Brave New World, I say this because in societies if they dont have a higher power to look up to then who are they going to turn to when things go wrong in the society? Each society has a creator and the citizens of that society look to that person for help, guidance, laws, etc. The controller in my perspective seems to just be a man of power that keeps things under control. So yes, he does seem to be a god in some ways but only to keep the society in check.
