In brave new world, in the dialogue between Fanny and Lenina; the phrase ending is better then mending is repeated many times. This phrase means discarding an item is better then trying to fix it. The way the phrase is repeated so many times it appears to be something that is engraved into the person’s mind; people living in this world probably have been conditioned to be constant consumers, as to constantly stimulate the economy. Now, taking this concept and applying it to our world, the United States I wonder if this would work. Would increasing our consumption of goods help stimulate, and maintain our economy? Our would it only take away what’s left of the money we save at home by mending our worn out clothes, or fixing our worn out shoes. It seems odd in society that has a motto of community, Identity, and stability, it is odd that there is an economy at all, it seems money always leads to instability; or is it that money maintains stability. Looking at our economy, does somebody else controlling how the country's money is spent such an effective way of getting money to the right people? Certainly, we face much instability from the amount of debt our country is in, can this simply be resolved by increasing consumption? Is that all an economy needs to be stable?
So, is constant consumption of products a good thing? Would this be able to be applied to the United States? Does economy, and money create or debilitate stability?
The only thing that I would be concerned about is, would we run out of products if we kept consuming? And lets say we did increase our consumption wouldn't prices go up because of the demand? I think if we were to increase our consumption it would only be beneficial for the companies selling the products. If we do want to stabilize our country it shouldn't revolve around money, but in todays society it seems we're controlled by money.
