In chapter 3 in
The Shallows, Carr brought up the clock in how it shapes our lives. Our
daily routines are revolved around time and so are our brains. School, work, sports,
our activities, etc. revolve around time. Since we would not know what time it
is would our lives be more relaxed? Would we be able to advance our technology
without time and be stuck? Would our cultures be different? Since time, we are
able to keep track our days and we are able to communicate better with other
countries. Clocks were made so that people could keep track of time, so then everyone
would need one. It changed our thinking process and “the way we saw ourselves.”
Some people think that we are controlled by technology…are we? “Abstract
framework of divided time became the point of reference for both action and
thought.” So what would our lives be like without time?
Clocks, in my opinion are not to just keep track of time, but to keep track of ourselves. We use clocks as a mean to organize our lives as best we can. If time-telling were to never have been invented I believe that life would be more leisurely but hectic because we would not be obligated to organize and prioritize our time.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand if time-telling had been invented and we somehow lost it, society would be in complete chaos, because we have come to rely on clocks as much as we have come to rely on technology and then some. As a whole, we are a very organized society because of our compulsive reliance on clocks, which navigates our ways though days, weeks, months and years.
