In Huxley's Brave New World, free will has been taken away from the people of this futuristic utopia. Although there is peace, prosperity, and no suffering, they have been deprived of making choices for themselves without brainwashing mechanisms, such as "moral education" being whispered to them in their sleeps. Their thoughts are not their own. They have been fed ignorance and bliss, programmed to do what society wants them to do. You may wonder why in Ford's sake they would do this, but it's really quite simple. As stated in Brave New World, its all for "The primal and the ultimate need. Stability. Hence all this."
They can't be blamed for wanting to build such a perfect utopia because the need for stability is what drove the pursuit of perfection. We hold too much power in our hands. Humans can destroy as easily as they can create. Without free will, the freedom to make whatever choice you wish, there can be no mistakes that can disrupt society or destroy society as a whole.
As wonderful as it for someone to take over and change everything so that there is no sickness, poverty, or suffering, is it truly worth losing your right to make a choice entirely on your own without the influence of others? That's mankind's greatest gift: the fact that one choice can change your life for better or worse. In this society, you are placed in a social class and have no desire to move up because you are brainwashed with the notion that you are happy where you are. They are faced with an "inescapable social destiny". If they face any problems, any worries, any sadness, they take an unrealistic happiness drug called soma.
As perfect as their life may seem, there’s no point in being alive if you are not allowed to live it the way you want to.
I do not think a perfect world is the answer to anything. Humans make mistakes. It is part of who we are. Even if there was a way to make the human race "perfect" is it something we would really want? Would we want to give up everything for a chance to be perfect?
ReplyDeleteI enjoy having my own free will. I like making my own choices and being an individual. So I absolutely agree that there is no point in existing if you can't make mistakes and be yourself.
