Are we drowning in the rip-tide of technology?
In the Afterword, Carr tells readers that he's swimming against a "cultural current", he encourages us to "grab an oar" and help swim against the rip-tide of technology. I would guess that its accurate to say that, in Carr's opinion, technology is pulling society under, but he intends to stay afloat. If you were to ask me if i agree with this sentiment, I would say no. Technology has improved and saved lives. Nicholas Carr does have a few good points in his book as well as Postman, but i don't believe as they do. We're already submerged in the era of technology and there's no going back weather we want to or not, and in my opinion, I would hope not. I am not concerned with the mentality society has come to achieve because what comes will come and there's no stopping it because the momentum behind technological reaserch is well under way. Do believe that society can redeemed? Can we really revoke all the progress and knowledge we've obtained as Carr attempts? Or are we doomed to drown in the rip-tide of technology?

It's impossible to let go of technology. People's lives revolve around technology. Carr's main point is that life is becoming too simple to be cherished. He believes life has evolved based on the corruption of the internet and technology. I believe technology is a privilege for all of us. Technology is not the only reason we live, however. Technology can't give us everything we truly want in life. It only makes some things more easily accessible. Why would we want to go back to harder lifestyles? Because knowledge was evolved, technology was bound to be evolved. Yes, more events should be experienced without thinking about technology and what not, but society has changed.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we will get lost in the "rip-tide" of technology. Like you said, technology has saved lives, by bringing up cures for diseases and medications. I don't think we would want to go back where technology was limited because some people tend to depend on it, for good or bad reasons. Technology is and will advance and with the common knowledge that goes along with the advancements we won't get lost or be doomed. Society seems to be going right along with it in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the commercial about the new TV show on NBC called "Revolution"? It talks about the power going out and never coming back on. The world is in chaos, and it's all because we lost our technology. The advancements are so ingrained in our daily lives that functioning rationally without it is nearly impossible. I wouldn't say that we are going to necessarily "drown" in the new technology that is being constantly developed, because we always find a way to, keeping the sea metaphor going here, "tread the waters" of technology. We have moved forward and there is no going back.
ReplyDeleteAlthough we are now so advanced in technology that it has come to the point of us not willing to give it up, I don't think we have much need to return to older ways. We are doing just fine with it, even though we are losing many things and are seeing more of the negative effects. Technology aids us in almost all of the important tasks we carry out, such as transporting to and from places or simply being able to maintain good living conditions. We would not be able to do much of the positive things that we are able to do nowadays without it. We have also come so far as to say there are improvements in our lives, so we would not want to go back to a place where those improvements will vanish. Sure we are being hit with the defects, but I don't think we need to be, or will be, revoked of all the progress we have made because of the fact that technology is a firm part of our lives.
