The Glass Castle
I started reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It is a memoir written by Walls herself. It tells her own childhood story. Her parents were unique but highly dysfunctional. Walls, her sister, and brother moved around all the time. They never really had a place they could call home. Her dad, Rex Walls, had a drinking problem and could never hold a job for more than a few months at a time. Her mother, Mary Wells, was an artist and a dreamer. They were both free spirits, skeptical of government and big cities. The family had to move because they were constantly chased by their creditors and in search for gold. Her father always thought that with his invention, the Prospector, he would find and gold and strike it rich. Then the family could he would build them a glass castle. They would have a home and have whatever they want. However, until then they would travel from place to place seeking out the gold. Walls loved her parents though. They taught her and her brother and sister well. They learned physics, geology, and to embrace life fearlessly. They loved them but they had an odd way of showing it. It is a very intriguing book and feels like I'm reading a novel. It makes me want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I become engrossed in Walls life. I find myself angry at her parents or empathetic towards her siblings. I become part of their life, moving around with them and feeling their love and anguish. I cannot wait to find out what happens next and to finish the book.
