In
chapter 3 of Brave New World, the controller is explaining the society, how it
worked in the past and how it’s changed. The controller says “stability. The
primal and ultimate need. Stability.
Hence all this.” They claim that the work they are doing with the
embryos will create a stable society. Is this viewing of having a stable
society right or wrong? In a normal
society, our stability is what and how we make it. If embryos were programmed,
wouldn’t questions be raised on why some are alpha plus and others are gammas?
Also, wouldn’t it be just like making them into robots? How is stability the
“primal and ultimate need”? Yes, everybody has a place in society, which is
ideal, but shouldn’t the ultimate need be to create more embryos? After all,
you need something to create a society with.
Creating a stable society in which everyone is happy is nearly impossible. In Brave New World the general population has had their future predestined before they were decanted based on needs of the society. Since they are based on the need of society, they lose their identity and become a worker of the State. A perfect example was when the Director wanted to exile Bernard he explained that if he wasn´t exiled then he would corrupt others and social stability would be lost. If Bernard was exiled the Director said another replacement could be decanted. Another thing that struck me was when the Director made murder seem like a little deal because a substitute could easily be made. Creating a stable society would deprive people from being unique and make them human robots that must do what is asked of them or be banished.
ReplyDeleteIn Brave New World society runs on stability but don't we also? Our country is not in chaos nor is it in poverty. There may be poverty within this country but as a whole we are stable. Just like in Brave New World there is a necessity for control and a person or a unit to maintain that control. Though we do not go to such an extent as in Huxleys world, we are alike in many ways. But maybe that was the point of Huxley fashioning his world in such a way that would make us reflect back onto ours and see the comparison.
ReplyDeleteI believe that everyone finds that stability is neccessary in their world. Whether it is through programming embryos, appointing a leader of the people, or having a caste system. In Brave New World, the people believe that a pre-determined works the best for them, but thorughout the book we realize many problems and obstacles the people in the book experience due to how they live. But, reading the book, we also realize that our world has problems trying to find that "perfect" stability as well.
