On the Brink of a Brave New World

I noticed how often the question being asked was “Would you choose this world or that one if it meant giving up so many good things?” After commenting on one of these threads, I started to think: Do we not already live at the brink of a brave new world? We are after all, living in a world where we have easy access to television, the internet, and 3D movies to amuse ourselves. We have the technology to cure multiple diseases. Yet, we are also able to keep our individuality, family, emotions, and books. The answer seems simple to which we would rather choose because, in our first world country, we live with many of the positives from the Brave New World without the negative of having to give something up in return.
Of course, the same is not true for numerous third world countries that suffer, not strive; who are threatened by death caused by deadly disease, war caused by religion. By giving up certain pleasures wouldn't we be saving countless lives? Are we selfish in keeping them? Do you think we are really that close to becoming this world? Or are we still very far?

  1. I agree that in some ways we do have the benefits mentioned in a Brave New World, however I do not think that we are very close to becoming like the society. We pay taxes, and we have many laws to follow. In a Brave New World there doesn't seem to be many laws that the people need to follow. I agree with you on the fact that we can simply give up some of our benefits, such as plasma screen TV's and the newest iPod to help pay for benefits in other countries. In some ways we are a kind of a less technologically advanced type of Society in a Brave New World but in other ways we have our induviduality and our rights

  2. I think that our country has strived to become a 1st world country. we had to of done something right for our country to have become the country wee are today or did we just get lucky? I also think that from let's say the 1940's to today a lot has changed. Before it used to be that the men worked and the women stayed home to do house work. Now you have stay at home men and working women. I think that we are slowly turning into a brave new world especially along the lines of chivalry because you hardly see it now. I think we are turning into a brave new world just a different version from the book.

  3. I believe that we should be able to help third- world countries if we had the discipline to give up some unnecessary devices and accessories like the numerous TVs, game stations, and designer jeans and handbags. Although, I doubt that much of the population of this proud country would contribute even a small percentage of their finances to help others. Some don’t even have money to spare for others’ sakes.

In the first chapter of Huxley’s Brave New World: Revisited, Huxley’s afterthoughts on the book, he realizes how much his “prophesies” from 1931 have jumped off the pages and was made part of reality. He says, “ I feel a good deal less optimistic than I did when I was writing Brave New World. The prophecies made in 1931 are coming true much sooner than I thought they would.” He only wrote this twenty-seven years later.

I’m sure we will eventually end up being a “Brave” New World. Even the author thinks so...
