Is it for the better or the worse?

In What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains the Shallows by Nicholas Carr, he speaks about technology and the many ways that it can affect our brains. He states some very interesting points and topics but what I realized was that the points he makes are stating helpful and unresourceful points. In one chapter he talks about the Internet causing a big decrease in people reading books. In another he speaks about video games and how those that play them have in increase in their peripheral vision and are able to notice more things than those who do not play them. So what I am thinking is, "Is technology really ruining our brains or helping them?" As more and more years go by the world keeps advancing in many ways. We are inventing new fast and easier ways to get things done. Let's say in fifty years will technology be taking over our lives in a discouraging way or just being involved in our lives way more than we ever expected but for the better?
