A Post About Carrots -- af

Dear Juniors:

I don't necessarily want to suggest that you kids are underachievers or anything, but there were 58 posts in the month of June last year.  I did offer a few extra credit points for early-starts, but for crying out loud, that 15 points didn't add up to ANYTHING by the time semester grades rolled around...so as I was designing this assignment, I thought to myself, "gosh, that was a silly exercise, one extra thing to track and calculate for very little pay-off, so why bother?"

Now I see why I bothered.  I am reminded — by your silence and the last class's relative loquaciousness — that students rarely do anything unless there is some kind of incentive, no matter how meaningless.

I have to admit that this depresses me a little bit, but I suppose that's just the way it is.  I guess I can understand...a girl can dream, though.  And June is far from over.
